What a Belt Actually Means at our Martial Arts School in Fusion Elite!

Belts are the most visible part of martial arts and the least understood.  Parents can usually tell you what color their child is, but that's about it! Far fewer could tell you what it took to get there, and that is mostly the fault of schools rather than parents.

The problem with belts you can buy

In some schools, a belt arrives on a schedule, whether a student is ready or not.  Attend for two months, pay a testing fee, receive the next color, no matter what.   That's a recipe for bad business!

And children work this out faster than adults think.  A ten year old who has watched everyone pass regardless of effort understands exactly what the belt is worth, and are no longer motivated to push harder.  Worse, it teaches the opposite of what we are supposed to be teaching, which is that standards are real and effort is what gets the reward!

What we look for

A belt to us means a student can do a defined set of things, on their own, in front of people, on a day they might be nervous with a level of proficiency appropriate for their age and ability level.  A 10 year old should be able to out perform a 5 year old in most cases because they have had more time to develop in life.

But there is much more to it...Technique is part of it. So is whether they can be corrected without falling apart, whether they can set an example for newer students, and whether they behave the same way when no instructor is watching.   We tell students exactly what is on the list well in advance so that they can prepare and hopefully bring their best effort!  There are no surprises on testing day.

Not everyone tests when they want to

This is the part that occasionally makes for an awkward conversation, and we have had to have it anyway.

If a student is not ready, we tell them before testing day rather than letting them fail in front of a room.  We explain the two or three specific things standing between them and the next belt, and we set a date to look again.

Nearly every child who has been through that comes back sharper. The belt they get afterwards means something more to them, because for a few weeks it was genuinely in doubt.

What testing week looks like

Students perform in front of instructors and receive grades and feedback during the week.  The room is usually full of peers and teammates trying to accomplish the same thing.  Parent watch from the sidelines and hope for the best.  There's some formalities and at the end of the week, a student learns whether they move on or not.

The nerves are the point. Most children today,  don't get many chances to be challenged physically and mentally in public, where the outcome is not guaranteed.  Learning to handle that well is a skill, and the belt is really just the receipt of that.

What we watch for at the end is the walk back to their parents.  The confidence in their eyes and that small seemingly insignificant smile that builds them up from the inside.  Every step forward is a notch up in confidence and self belief!   You can spot the difference from across the room.

How long it takes

Longer than many local schools, and that is deliberate. The exact pace depends on the program and how often a student trains.

If you want the specifics for your child's age group, ask us in person and we will walk you through the whole path rather than giving you a number that sounds good.

Come and watch one

Testing days are open, and watching one is the fastest way to judge any martial arts school. You will see the standard for yourself in about twenty minutes.

Have a look at our programs, check the schedule, or book a free trial class and start from the beginning. We have been promoting students in Rocklin since 1993 and we still treat every belt as something that has to be earned.
